Kuma’s Quick Shots #21: Khaz and Destruction Luster

Posted by

Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column where I dissect the latest offerings from the scene to help you determine what’s worth listening to.  This month, I have two EPs to that embody very different aesthetics within the scene.  The first is an endearing cross pollination of pop culture that feels slightly tongue-in-cheek.  The second is a more serious attempt at capturing the glorious nostalgia of a niche within PC gaming that is often overlooked. These albums both succeed at capturing the attention of their intended audiences, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t take the time to showcase them properly.  So let’s not waste anymore time. Join me as I delve deep into work from newcomer Khaz and multi-faceted veteran Destruction Luster.

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 17

Hey, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots, the album review column in which I break down some of the latest albums the scene has to offer then give a numerical tl;dr to help you determine if they’re worth your time.  For this month’s edition, I have two highly intriguing records that are more subdued than anything I’ve reviewed this year.  One is a short debut EP from an artist best known for his illustrations on tumblr and Youtube. The other is from a musician that combines traditional instrumentation and stirring vocals to craft somber, heartfelt folk music.  Both offer work that’s rather converse for the time of year, as introspection is not often an emotion associated with the summer.  This divergence from the norm, however, is what made me check them out, and I think you’ll find yourself wanting to, as well, as I was quite surprised with what I found.  Let’s not waste any more time.  Sit back, relax, and join me as I take the time to review music from newcomers Rod-Scorpion and Three-Year Day Job.

Aydan Appreciates: The IOUT Open Mixtape 2015

Posted by

Hey there, ChipWINners! You may remember a review I wrote a few months ago on Imaginary’s ‘Unnatural Flavors’ album. To refresh you folks a little bit, Imaginary is the head of a chipmusic netlabel known as Interpretation of Universal Transmissions, and as such, is affiliated with numerous chipmusicians from around the globe. At the very end of January, the Interpretation of Universal Transmissions Open Mixtape 2015 was released, featuring a number of artists both familiar and foreign. Each track brings its own unique flair to the compilation, but I’m going to be showcasing four specific tracks out of the many. Let’s go ahead and see what transmissions are being sent out today!

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Unnatural Flavors’ by Imaginary

Interpretation of Universal Transmissions is a chipmusic netlabel that has quietly released four albums since August 2014. The label was fairly active between August and October of 2014 and spawned three delightful albums including the ‘Summer Soda Comp 2014’, featuring artists ChipWIN fans will recognize, such as Kommisar and DBOYD. A year after the release of the ‘Soda Comp’, Imaginary bursts back onto the scene with ‘Unnatural Flavors’, a carbonated album all his own. Let’s take a look at what’s in this assortment of aural refreshments!

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4 [Tracks 16 – 20]

Posted by

Describing the next five tracks from our 4th compilation album is a lot like plucking five roses from a stunning bouquet, or stacking five bacon pancakes onto your plate from a pile fresh off the griddle: you can’t go wrong, and they taste even better with syrup. (Chiptunes = WIN does not endorse the practice of eating syrup-coated roses. Chiptunes = WIN does, however, heavily endorse bacon pancakes.)

Volume 4 is a gathering of the best from all corners of the community. There are only beacons of chiptune mastery here, and though your personal tastes may steer you toward some songs over others, each track is a curated experience, and all come highly recommended.

Without further ado, I am honoured to bring you Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4’s tracks 16 through 20. Come listen!
