Aydan Appreciates: ‘Rogue Singularity’ by Derris-Kharlan

Posted by

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve heard the name Derris-Kharlan, so when Brandon notified me that an indie game with a soundtrack by this seldom-featured artist had been released, I was intrigued. I was quite excited to see what the project is all about, and wanted to familiarize myself with some of his previous compositions prior to this review. In perusing his Bandcamp page, I found the bizarrely comical Sonic Art series, a track released through the GameChops label, and I was reminded of his track on the classic ChipWIN Expansion Pack. Needless to say, his releases are few and occasionally far in-between. The excitement I had for this album spurs, however, from an iconic chipmusic album I love deeply – Ubiktune’s 2010 ‘Wintertunes‘. Derris-Kharlan’s contribution, ‘Reconciliation‘, is a piece that has always been special to me. It would play on my commutes to my college courses, or while I was studying or heading to work when I was just getting into chipmusic. I’m excited to have the opportunity to review ‘Rogue Singularity’, and I’m prepared to see what lies beyond the shroud of the stars!

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: MisfitChris – ‘Illegal Street Racing’

Posted by

After a long hiatus I’m back with ChipWIN writing about some chiptune music, and what better way than beginning with the fantastic album, ‘Illegal Street Racing’ by MisfitChris? This was initially released towards the end of January as solely a digital album. However, it wasn’t until June 24th, when ‘Data Airlines’ produced the cassette release of ‘Illegal Street Racing’, did it come under my radar.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Klingsardry’ by Kplecraft

Posted by

Long ago, deep in the archives of the 8bp community, there was an experimental, Japanese chiptune duo by the name of Kplecraft. Utilizing a wide variety of percussive instruments and a saxophone to name just a few, Kplecraft’s sound is complex in theoretical scope and instrumental diversity. After an eight-year hiatus, they’ve released a new album titled ‘Klingsardry’. Having been released through the Cheapbeats label and recommended to me by Brandon himself – not to mention, its teaser being a fully animated video set to a portion of each track – it’s safe to say that this album was destined to blow my mind.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘BETTER THAN REALITY’ by LukHash

Posted by

Two and a half years ago, I had the honor of reviewing an album that heavily altered my perception of chipmusic. That album was ‘GLITCH’ by LukHash, and its smooth fusion of genres blew me away; so much so that it became a permanent addition to my playlists. While I missed reviewing the musical artisan’s October 2018 release, ‘GHOSTS’, he’s quickly come out with yet another mindblowing, genre-defying release with ‘BETTER THAN REALITY’. Plug in your headphones and prepare yourself…this is one hell of a ride.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Glooms – ‘Vanilla Dome’

Posted by

I have had my hands full with Chip Bit Day, so instead of reviewing something new I decided to look back to an album that was released last year on ‘Datafruits’. ‘Vanilla Dome’ by ‘Glooms’ was a truly fantastic album. Created using a copy of Nanoloop 2 synced up to a Korg Electribe Drum Machine, Vanilla featured a vast amount skill with sound engineering and programming.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘The Best of DDRKirby(ISQ) – Volume 2’

Posted by

DDRKirby(ISQ) has composed an absolutely obscene amount of quality tunes over the past decade and a half, and is a long-standing member of both the OCRemix and chipmusic communities. Predominantly composing music for a series of themed game competitions called the ‘Ludum Dare’ series, DDRKirby(ISQ) and friends have created dozens of these small, entertaining, browser-based games. With this competition being held once every six months, a colossal amount of material has been composed; DDRKirby(ISQ) has graciously compiled what they consider to be their best hits over the past few years. From video game remixes to original compositions, the album is simply packed full of memorable music!
