ChipWIN-tern’s Netlabels To Keep An Eye On

Posted by

I know we here at ChipWIN generally tend to stay away from Buzzfeed-y listicle-type articles, but with all the different music coming out these days it can be super hard to actually keep up with everything. If you don’t know where to look, you’ll miss something great – and if you DO know where to look, all your friends will love you for giving them dank music recommendations!* (*Note: ChipWIN does not guarantee love of any kind regardless of the circumstance.)

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, here’s some of my favorite places to find chiptune and chiptune-adjacent music.

Fives and Nines: Tuberz McGee reviews ‘Exit Plan’ by Fearofdark

Posted by

Fearofdark is not a newcomer on the scene, but rather a miracle of modern science, a beacon of Chiptune wisdom, and a coffee enthusiast. As a revered Famitracker Wizard and ModPlug Master coming off the back of several successful albums, Mr. ofdark has released a brand new chippy toure de force titled ‘Exit Plan’. The album combines his love of jazz harmonies, four to the floor head bobbing, and pseudo avant garde whole tone weirdness. ‘Exit Plan’ is released through Ubiktune, a label known for their ridiculously complex, progressive music that combines super catchy melodies and riffs with weird time signatures and absurd harmonic progressions. This album is no outlier. It exemplifies everything that I just listed, as this album is masterfully crafted.

Alright team. Let’s go on a journey. Let’s jam!

Chip Bit Sid Takes on: Zabutom – ‘Redux34’

Posted by

For this review I’m going back in time to last year with Zabutom’s ‘Redux34’ released via Ubiktune. Zabutom is an artist who resides in Gothburg, Sweden with his main styles being based around electro, vgm & progressive music, finally taking his roots from the swedish demoscene. Not tied down to a single instrument, Zabutom uses a variety of different hardware, ranging from the iconic game boys, to more technical musical instruments, such as FM Synths.

So You Wanna Make A Chiptune #4: Motivation

Posted by

Happy New Year ChipWINners!  Welcome back to my column, So You Wanna Make A Chiptune! It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these.  Normally, I’ve reserved SYWMAC for the review of hardware and software related to the production of chiptune to help you determine what would be best suited for you. However, with this being the first article of the new year, I thought I’d talk about something just as important: motivation.

I’m sure a great many of you have made resolutions to become more active, steadfast and prolific with your creative endeavors. Just like with any other resolution, I know you’re going to need help staying focused. It’s okay: concentrating on new goals, New Year’s resolutions or otherwise, can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources within the scene to help you stay motivated! If you’re willing to work towards your larger goal by doing smaller goals, you’re guaranteed to make your dreams a reality in no time. Let’s not waste any more time. Come along with me as I guide you beautiful unicorns to pristine waters that I hope you will drink from!

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘Nexus Genesis’ by Hunty

Imagine, if you will, a world where Cease and Desist orders don’t exist. Independent game developers make their own fan projects, and are able to share these homages to their favorite classic games without fear of the original company taking them down or threatening lawsuits. A place where talented fans work together to keep the fandoms alive when they’ve been abandoned by the original game creators. We call this place… The Twilight Zone, Act 1.

Was that a hidden level in the game? YOU’LL NEVER KNOW NOW!
