‘Nadir’ was my first exposure to 4mat’s timeless and emotional music. I was given the honor to review the album in 2014, and it filled a musical void I never knew existed until I listened to it in depth over and over again. With off-kilter percussion and melodies, polyrhythms galore, and overarching themes of memory and self-doubt, ‘Nadir’ is a thing of beauty, with some of its hauntingly beautiful melodies still ringing in my head to this day. Since the release of ‘Nadir‘ and the remaster of ‘Decades‘, however, the artist’s Bandcamp page had been relatively quiet up until the surprising release of ‘Modern Closure’, an expansive 18-track journey through the depths of emotion.
What’s up nerds. Rhyphte here, and we got new tunes to talk about. Coming at us straight from London, we’ve gota ripe new release by Shirobon. Aptly titled ‘Rebirth,’ it’s a true return to form for the artist, being primarily based on LSDJ x1. While it’s not the flashiest album Mikey has ever debuted, it’s certainly one that I enjoyed, primarily due to my unbridled enthusiasm for quality LSDJ music. Without further delay, let’s dive right in.
Hello everyone and thank you for reading The ChipWIN Blog! Today we’re going to review ‘Titan’ another great Cheapbeats release, and the second full-length album by Austral-English chip legend Alex Lane!
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Alex two years ago at Eindbaas, in Utrecht, NL. We were set to play the pre-party open stage, it was our first ever show abroad, let alone in such an important event, and we were super stressed out. Then, this round-faced guy comes up with a BEAMING smile and says hi. Stress was lifted. We hit it off instantly. Alex has the reputation of being the Nicest Guy In Chiptune™ and to be honest, I couldn’t fault anyone for thinking that. My point is, don’t be surprised if this review comes off as a little ♥biased♥. I like Alex a lot as a person. But holy moly do I love him as a musician.
Hello beautiful people and thank you for reading The ChipWIN Blog! Today let’s steer clear from technobabble, we’re here to burst Techno Bubbles together with the Marvellous Mizkai! Hailing from her northern homeland in Wales, Mizkai has been sort of a missing link between Japan and the Isles for a few years now, channelling Japanese and Internet hardcore-sugar-pop culture into her stage alter-ego, and distilling it into the strongest, sweetest cuppa teas ever brewed on this side of the globe.
Even though Mizkai has been around in the scene for quite some time already, dishing out some truly tasty jams on her SoundCloud, she never was much of a fan of “big” or “official” releases, nor did she seem to need it to ascertain her musical and visual identity as an artist. ‘Kiss/Corrupt/Kill’ is an updated, enhanced and somewhat more mature version of her EP ‘Nintendork’, previously published on Bandcamp and sadly, no longer available.
But long before these releases already, Mizkai had been a driving force in the UK Chiptune scene, and where she shone the brightest was live. Quite literally so, might I add. Having had the pleasure of sharing a stage with her and witnessing her awe-inspiring, relentless performance, I was very excited when I heard about this EP. As you know, good jams go well with toast, so I had to be the one to review it. Here’s a selection of my personal favourite tracks.
Hey ChipWINners! 2016 has been a breathtakingly impressive year for chipmusic. It’s not even the end of February yet and we’ve already seen amazing work from the likes of LITTLE PAW, Awesome Force, Conquer Monster, and many others. While there have been some rising stars and a lot of new talent hitting the scene, chiptune veterans are strutting their stuff as well, pushing our community into the brink of mainstream music culture. One such example would be the legendary Shirobon, whose most recent releases, ‘The Arcade Dream’ and ‘Infinity’, blew a lot of his impressive earlier work out of the water. Just last week, he released his latest work through Hyperwave Records, ‘Dimensions’, and it’s already been received with astounding applause and praise from the community. Let’s take a look at what Shirobon’s EP has in store for us!
