Stokin’ the Forge – ‘Squarewave oasis’ by Fat Frumos

Posted by

September salutations to all of the fine folks of the ChipWIN Nation! This month, it’s my distinct pleasure to share a solid release out of the Ukraine. Odessa’s own Fat Frumos released Squarewave Oasis on Bandcamp last month. The album caught my attention by grabbing hold both of my ears and my rose-tinted recollection of happy hardcore fueled nights of reckless driving.  Self described as an acidcore, chiprave, raggacore, and breakcore release, Squarewave Oasis meshes together a variety of styles into a unique musical admixture. On the surface, the release is good, and upon deep inspection, it is really good. It shines in the places where that rich stylistic palette is allowed to coalesce and truly highlight what Fat Frumos is capable of.

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4 [Tracks 26 – 30]

Posted by

If you’re hoping to find some good music to listen to, its hard to go wrong by picking up a Chiptunes = WIN compilation. Volume 4 really hammers home that point. Every single contribution made is truly a masterwork by their respective artists. In writing this review, I spent the better part of four hours listening to these five tracks on repeat.  You know what? I’d do it again. They are truly just that good.

That said, hop the fold and let’s get to the real MVPs of the day.

Stokin’ the Forge — ‘photographs’ by LoneMoon

Posted by

Welcome to the sunny June edition of Stokin’ the Forge ChipWINners! This month it is my distinct pleasure to present you with the chill-chip contained on LoneMoon’s latest album, ‘photographs’. As a whole, the music rolls across the ear soothingly, warmly encouraging a listener to kick back and let their troubles melt away. It pairs sublimely with anything that involves pretending the rest of the world doesn’t exist. Join me on the other side of the fold and we’ll dive into my favorite tracks.

Stoking the Forge: ‘FOLIAGE EP’ by scatterpattern

Posted by

March has roared in like a lion, noble ChipWINNERs, and the time has come again to open the Forge to one and all.  I’m glad to have you back again for this month’s instalment because I’ve stumbled across an up and comer named scatterpattern, and his debut LSDJ EP, ‘FOLIAGE’ has gotten me quite fired me up.

A farm boy from the rugged wilds of Canada’s Manitoba, scatterpattern didn’t own his first Gameboy until 2013, but by no means is he a stranger to music.  Considering himself a bassist at heart, he got his start playing in metal bands before starting the techno-8bit noise band Gamma Dragons with his friend and consistent musical cohort, Tspeiro.  Once he acquired his first gameboy and an LSDJ cart, that obsession familiar to many readers of this blog took a firm root in his brain stem.
