Posted by

Welcome to the final Sladerfluous Reviews of two thousand and sixteen ladies and gentlemen!

This year we’ve explored newcomers and veterans, official soundtracks and original indie fare. Endeavouring to highlight albums and works that deliver inspiration, authenticity, skill, and entertainment is our unending task here at Chiptunes = WIN.

Hopefully you have found a new favourite or two through the Sladerfluous catalogue, but as 2016 draws to a close, let’s take a look back at the defining tracks from this year’s Sladerfluous Reviews!

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: The ‘xyce vs.’ Series

Posted by

Howdy-ho, chipeople. You know what’s great about chiptune? The fact that someone can have an absolutely silly idea and have it spiral into an overwhelming success. Sometimes that’s just dropping those “sick clabs” with your friends, sometimes it’s doing a cover album or if you’re Tom Offringa and Roel Heerspink, it’s both. Starting last year on Halloween, xyce kicked off what I hope to be a long tradition of albums which I will be henceforth referring to the “xyce vs.” series – last year’s album was ‘xyce vs. backstreet boys’, and this year we got ‘xyce vs. genesis’. Call them cover albums, call them re-imaginings, call them revamps, call them whatever you like as long as you’re calling them awesome.

Sladerfluous Reviews: ‘Autre’ by xyce

‘Autre’ by xyce is one of those “YOU GOT CHOCOLATE IN MY PEANUT BUTTER” moments if the peanut butter was a grassy meadow of adorable frolicking chip-bunnies and the chocolate was a giant head-bangin’ bridge troll shoulder-checking said bunnies into a mosh-pit style frenzy.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Four Small Songs!

Posted by

Chiptune is not a place for the lazy man, with people all across the world creating astounding beats, either through retro hardware or invoking their love for nostalgia through modern equipment. Unfortunately due to the pit of music we all start in, the majority of all these songs sadly remain silent with only a handful of people listening to their glory. So because of this, I decided to start a Soundcloud group. A little vault where people can upload their hidden gems. From there, I select four awesome tunes that you wouldn’t normally hear.

So anyway, let’s get right into this!

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 10

Sup ChipWINners? Welcome back to Quick Shots, the album review column where I take a gander at new releases and throw my fifty cents in on their overall quality. This time around, instead of reviewing albums from a few underdogs in the scene, I’ve taken the time to look over releases from three artists that I first became familiar with because of Chiptunes = WIN! Each of these artists were all featured in ChipWIN Vol. 1 and not only have I loved them all since then, but I’ve seen them continue to grow and change in ways that have made me look at music differently. So without further ado, I’d like for you guys to join me as I take a gander at new music from Lukhash, Whitely, and +Let’s Disinfect!+!

Aydan Appreciates: ‘All Stars’ by Cheapbeats

Many a ChipWINner will recognize the Cheapbeats netlabel, not just from their co-release ‘Cheapbeats = WIN‘, but also interviews with James York here on the blog, and, of course,  their slew of impressive releases within the chipmusic community. Now celebrating their ‘two point seventy three anniversary’, they’ve released a compilation featuring previously released songs from every single artist who’s ever released on their label and entitled it ‘All Stars’. The album is one hell of a ride from start to finish, and I really do wish I could give each track its proper recognition; that would, unfortunately, make for a VERY long review. As a result, I’m going to give you a rundown on my five personal favorite tracks. Let’s take a look at some of the amazing sounds this album has to offer! (more…)
